Welcome to Magpie Cottages and Spa

Nestled in the heart of the Goyt Valley, our peak district cottages are situated on the banks of the river Goyt and form part of Lower Dale Farm Equestrian Centre (British Horse Society Highly Commended). With picturesque walks in all directions, you can watch for our King Fisher pair, also observe the birds of prey and the numerous herons from the banks of the river. Our self-catering cottages are conveniently situated in Greater Manchester, just 2 minutes drive from Rose Hill and Marple Stations for a 25-minute journey to Manchester city centre, only 20 minutes driving distance from Manchester airport and 15 minutes drive to Stockport. Edale is just 15 miles away which is in the heart of the Peak District.

fish

Fishermen will find Brown Trout, Grayling and even the occasional Salmon in a stretch of river alongside the cottages. A path (cycle/bridle/foot) meanders along the riverside with a short walk/cycle to a country pub which serves food all day, or for those interested in history link over to Chadkirk Country Estate and Chapel which dates back to the Doomsday book! Here you can also visit our local farm shop and purchase organic, locally produced food and drink. Alternatively, walk around the 100-acre farm and woodland, incorporating the grounds of the historically important Marple Hall, discover our private bluebell wood or search for the Common Spotted or Northern Marsh Orchids.

deer

If you are very lucky you may spot our small herd of fallow deer who inhabit the woodland. Take a guided tour round our equestrian centre and see it in action. Children can  feed our chickens and collect the eggs that we provide in our welcome packs. With our “Pets Welcome” and “Horses Welcome” you can bring your beloved horse, dog or cat on holiday with you. Here at Magpie we try to be as environmentally friendly as possible including conservation. We recycle and use low energy bulbs wherever possible. Our own apiaries and bees provide local wild flower honey and wax to make soaps, lip balms etc; we also have an owl box adjacent to the river.

We have had an amazing time recently at Magpie Cottages. The accommodation was truly excellent and everything was so... thoughtfully prepared for our arrival including a welcome pack of organic bread, homemade jam and eggs from the farm. We were able to enjoy the new comfortable leather sofas and slept well on the one which easily pulled out into a generous sized double bed.The place was clean and beautifully presented with special touches to make everyone feel welcome. Even our family dog had a dog bed, dish, blankets and towel!!!Our 8 year old son has additional needs and both Liz and Ian went out of their way to make him feel safe and involved. He helped to collect the eggs and feed the chickens. We can particularly recommend the horse riding session which he thoroughly enjoyed. The hot tub was also a highlight of our stay along with the peaceful walks along the river.Liz and Ian did everything possible to make our stay special. We highly recommend Magpie Cottages. It is quite unique and has something for everyone.read more
